Asim, Shahzad lose doubles final


ISLAMABAD, Oct 26: Medically-weakened Pakistani pair of Asim Shafiq and Shahzad Khan lost in straight sets to their rivals in the men’s doubles final of the Futures International Ranking Tennis Tournament at the PTF Complex on Friday.

Bogdan Victor Leonte of Romania and Adam Vejmelka of Czech Republic captured the doubles title with a 6-2, 6-4 victory over the Asim-Shahzad pair in the day’s only fixture.

Vejmelka, Leonte won the first set 6-2 by breaking the first and seventh games of Shahzad and Shafiq.

In the second set the Vejmelka/Leonte duo built a 3-1 lead by breaking the third game of Asim and Shafiq who felt unwell during the match and also vomited on the court. The victors took the second set 6-4 by holding their own services to claim the title.

The men’s singles semi-finals and final will be staged on Saturday and Sunday respectively.

Pakistan’s Aqeel Khan will face Adam Vejmelka of Czech Republic in the men’s singles semi-final at 11.00am while Hyun-Soo Lim of South

Korea will take on Bogdan Victor leonte at 2.30pm in the second singles semi-final on Saturday.

The final will be played at 2:30pm on Sunday.—APP
