Pakistan chess team hopes to excel in Macau

LAHORE, Oct 17: Pakistan will be looking to clinch a few medals in the chess competition of the 2nd Indoor Asian Games to be held in Macau from Oct 23 to Nov 6, said the ten-times national chess champion Mahmood Lodhi.

Talking to Dawn, Mahmood who will also be accompanying the four-member chess team in Macau, said all the players in the team were well prepared and though they were up against tough opponents from India and China, they had the talent to win medals in all the five events of the chess competition.

Pakistan are to field teams in the events of athletics, snooker, kabaddi besides chess.

Mahmood said he had recently taken part in two international event in Yemen and Abu Dhabi and did well there which gave him good practice for the Asian event.

In Yemen, Lodhi remained fourth among a total of 82 participants while in Abu Dhabi he finished 11th among 78 competitors.

The other members of chess team travelling to Macau are national champion Tanvir Gillani, Aamir Karim and Mohammad Younis.
