KARACHI: No strike in SHC

Published September 6, 2007

KARACHI, Sept 5: There would be no strike in the Sindh High Court on Thursday, the SHC Bar Association’s managing committee unanimously decided on Wednesday.

A resolution adopted by the committee said the country’s legal profession, including SHCBA members and office-bearers, waged an unprecedented and historic struggle for over four months and strived for the independence of the judiciary. They rendered sacrifices along with other members of the civil society for a worthy cause and their struggle culminated in a landmark judgment by the Supreme Court on July 20.

The SHCBA resolution demanded that a convention of lawyers’ representatives from across the country be convened in Karachi to launch another movement. The convention, to be attended by the duly accredited nominees of all bar associations and councils, should discuss threadbare the future course of action. The ‘Joint Action Committee’ meeting in Lahore had no locus standi to take far-reaching decisions without associating the representative bar associations and councils, it added.

Talking to reporters later, SHCBA President Abrar Hasan said that lawyers should not fritter away the gains made by them and split their unity by taking unilateral decisions. They owe an obligation to the litigant public, which also suffered during the struggle. Adjournment of cases due to strike adversely affected the interests of litigants and added to the workload of courts and lawyers by obstructing early disposal of cases, he remarked.
