LAHORE, Sept 3: Fancied colt Kiss Of Luck and filly Simbi lived up to their star billing, landing the War Heroes Cup for class four and five horses respectively, at the Lahore Winter Meeting, held in connection with the Defence Day at the Racecourse on Sunday evening.

Owned by Arif Javaid and ridden by Atif Javaid, three-year-old Kiss Of Luck beat Royal Fish by four lengths to win the feature event.

Gelding Zanjeer finished third while Noor completed the frame among eight runners.

This was Kiss Of Luck’s fourth victory in a row. Backed confidently at 25 to 100 favourite, he defied weight of nine stone five pounds in handicap and in spite of swerving wide in the straight, never let any of his seven rivals come close to him. He timed one minute 20 seconds for 1,400 metres. This was the sixth race.

A race earlier, the 30 to 100 favourite dark-bay filly, Simbi, owned by Junaid Rashid Rana and ridden by jockey Shahid Rehman, fought a neck to neck battle to win the supporting event, run over 1,200 metres.

She edged out fast-improving colt Sharp Burg at the finishing post. Royal Destiny and Great Bulbul made up the frame among eleven starters left after last-minute withdrawals of Baker’s View and Azam Love.

Long-shot bay gelding Volcano swept to volcanic win to lift the Shabbir Sharif Shaheed Cup, contested over 1,200 metres.

He beat Mannan Prince by over five lengths. Shah Pari and Stride To Moment claimed third and fourth places respectively.

Hot favourite filly Lucky Cat, ridden by Shahid Rehman, put up a dismal show to disappoint her supporters. Her run did not approve the connections act to back it as “owner’s bet fancy” and above all her trainer, Haji Fazal Hadi, was cocksure about victory.

Owner M. Nawaz had a very profitable evening as he won two events. His filly Zohra Jabeen and colt Toyota won Major Raja Aziz Bhatti Shaheed and Major M. Akram Shaheed Cups respectively. Both the races were contested over 1,000 metres.

Taking full advantage of his light-weight placing in the handicap, mare Three In One strode to victory in the Capt. Raja M. Sarwar Shaheed Cup which was run over 1,000 metres.

The rank outsider eight-year-old mare, Three In One beat bay horse Company by over two lengths. The second placed horse, Company, was carelessly ridden by M. Wasim Khan. Had there been any other rider, Company would have won the race.

Surprisingly, M. Zeeshan brought in a brace of winners to register a cup double. The rider did not fall in leading jockey’s lot. He rode home Zohra Jabeen and Toyota. His both winners were sent out by trainer M. Arshad.

Another trainer Rashid Latif also had a good double through Volcano and Kiss Of Luck.
