KARACHI: 3 booked for murder of student activist

By Our Staff Reporter

KARACHI, Aug 26: Police registered an FIR on Sunday about the killing of an Islami Jamiat-i-Talaba’s worker on Saturday on the premises of the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre in a clash between rival student groups that also left three workers of the Punjabi Students’ Association injured.

Farhan Ahmed Butt, a first-year student of JPMC School of Physiotherapy, was the second IJT worker to be killed over the past 11 days in showdowns between the IJT and the PSA.

On a complaint of Amjad Ali, Saddar police registered an FIR (136/2007) of murder and attempt to murder under sections 302, 324/34 CrPC against three members of the PSA, Kamran alias Kami, Malik Saqib and Tazeem Hussain.

On Aug 15, Hafiz Abdur Rehman Tahir, a student of the JPMC School of Physiotherapy and IJT nazim, was beaten to death allegedly by the rival student group. Subsequently, an FIR was registered on Aug 16, but police failed to deliver.

According to an IJT press release, the body of 19-year-old Butt was shifted to his native village near Kotli district in Azad Jammu and Kashmir where he was buried on Sunday evening. Hundreds of people participated in his funeral prayers.

Farhan Ahmed Butt had recently moved to Karachi to start a four-year course as a physiotherapist.

Meanwhile, a few patients turned up at the hospital as tension prevailed at the JPMC. Since the Out-patient department clinics do not function on Sundays, the casualty ward managed to cater to the need of patients in need.
