Bush lauds Musharraf, Karzai on jirga

By Anwar Iqbal

WASHINGTON, Aug 14: US President George W. Bush spoke with his Pakistani and Afghan counterparts on Tuesday and congratulated them on the successful conclusion of the joint peace jirga, the White House said.

The jirga was held in Kabul from Aug 9 to 12.

White House spokesman Dana Perino told reporters that Mr Bush spoke separately with the Afghan and Pakistani presidents.

He also spoke to Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, congratulating on India’s 60th anniversary of independence.

“The two leaders also discussed the civil nuclear cooperation initiative, climate change, the importance of a successful outcome in the Doha round, and regional security,” Ms Perino said.
