KARACHI: Robber shot dead in North Karachi
Thousands of people remained stranded on roads on Wednesday when miscreants blocked the Super Highway near Al-Asif Square. Sachal police said around 50 to 60 miscreants pelted vehicles with stones and blocked the highway for 40 minutes. However, they said, the area police reached the spot and cleared the road within half an hour after tear gas shelling. DIG of Zone East Mir Zubair Mehmood told Dawn that the miscreants blocked the highway to protest against the arrest of one Din Mohamed on Tuesday by Sachal police. He said the situation was controlled by the area police and the highway was cleared after the blockage of 30 minutes. He said the town police officer of Gulshan-i-Iqbal and other senior police officials reached the spot and dispersed the protesters. The DIG said the trouble started at around 6.30pm and the situation was brought under control by 7pm. In a related development, some people tried to block the road in PIB Colony. However, sources said, the police reached the spot on time and cleared the road for vehicular traffic. Sources said Din Mohammed was involved in attacking the offices of a political party in the Sachal police area. He was booked under Sections 324 and 342 of the Pakistan Penal Code, they added. A large number of vehicles moved at a snail’s pace on the Super Highway due to the blockage. However, the smooth flow of traffic was restored within an hour. A gang of over two dozen armed men stormed into a dairy farm in the Sachal police jurisdiction and drove away 40 buffaloes after holding the employees hostage at gunpoint. Farhan Shah, son of the owner of the Syed Dairy Farm, told Dawn that the dacoits had come in two trucks and they remained on the farm for over four hours.
