Cricketer dies after being struck by ball


LONDON, July 23: Derek Newman, a medium pace bowler of Porthleven Cricket Club, died after being struck in the chest by ball while attempting a boundary catch. According to Cornwall Cricket League website, Newman suffered a cardiac arrest after being struck by ball while playing against St Just in a Cornwall Division Three West League match. He was later pronounced dead at Royal Cornwall Hospital in Truro.A Cornwall Cricket League spokesman was quoted by BBC as saying, “As far as the league is concerned it was a tragic accident. There was nothing untoward.”

He said members were mourning his death.

Porthleven Club chairman John Walker described Newman as “a perfect gent, real nice guy of the club.”—Agencies
