KARACHI, July 13: City Nazim Syed Mustafa Kamal has expressed his dismay over being held responsible for any lapse in municipal services in any part of the metropolis, pointing out that there were 13 heads responsible to run the administration.

“There is not a single city in the world having 13 heads responsible to run the administration,” he remarked while talking to media here on Friday.

The city government had just 36 per cent of the city’s land under its administrative control, he said dispelling the impression among the local and overseas Pakistanis that the CDGK nazim alone was responsible to manage the city’s administrative affairs.

Mr Kamal pointed out that almost all major cities in the world had only one administrative authority -- the local government – which enjoyed all administrative and financial powers and worked under elected representatives.

“The City District Government Karachi should, therefore, be authorised under sub-sections 22 and 36 of the section 2 of SLGO to recover charges and revenue against the municipal services being provided by it.”

According to him, other stakeholders should retain their proprietary rights as per law, but the city government should keep with it municipal services, particularly water supply, sewerage, solid waste management and hoardings management, and collect revenues thereof.

The city nazim said that the CDGK was working day and night to provide facilities like flyovers, underpasses and signal-free corridors to provide comfortable commuting facilities to citizens.
