SC asks capital police chief to submit reports on July 3: Kafila case

ISLAMABAD, June 29: The Supreme Court has ordered the police to submit report on Kafila Siddiqui case as well as that of former minister of state for communications Mohammad Shahid Jamil Qureshi’s health on July 3, sources told Dawn.
Senior-most judge of the Supreme Court, Mr Justice Javed Iqbal directed the Inspector General of Police, Islamabad, Chaudhry Iftikhar Ahmad to submit the autopsy and chemical examiner’s report of Kafila Siddiqui as well as the medical report of the former junior minister.
It may be mentioned here that last Saturday the Supreme Court took suo motu notice of Kafila Siddiqui case after the Canadian government showed its apprehensions about the woman’s mysterious death.
The apex court summoned the advocate general Punjab as well as IGP Islamabad.
Justice Iqbal expressed concern over the grant of interim bail to Mr Qureshi though his driver, Zulfiqar Awan, and cook, Allahyar, were taken into custody by the police.
Salman Qaiser, the husband of the deceased, had reportedly expressed the apprehensions that investigations into the death might not be conducted in a transparent manner.
IGP Islamabad, Station House Officer of Shalimar Police Station Ghulam Mohammad Baqir, Advocate General Punjab and Ms Siddiqui’s brother Mustafa Qayyum were also present during the suo motu proceeding.
The judge also directed the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (Pims) executive director, medico-legal officer, who conducted the autopsy of Ms Kafila, a Pims doctor, who referred Mr Qureshi to AFIC on the night of June 23 when he came to the hospital with chest pain, and Brig Dr Azhar Kiani, a doctor at the AFIC, to appear in his chamber on June 3.
Meanwhile, Senior Civil Judge Abid Rizwan Abid has put off the hearing of Mr Qureshi’s bail petition to July 3, as the Supreme Court has intervened in the matter and sought complete record.
The counsel of the former minister had submitted an application in the court for seeking bail of Mr Qureshi on June 26.
