Cars import falls 22.89pc

ISLAMABAD, June 26: The import of complete knocked-down (CKD) and semi-knocked-down (SKD) cars recorded a decline of 22.89 per cent during the first 11 months (July-May) of the current fiscal year over the same period of last year.

Official figures compiled by Central Board of Revenue (CBR) showed that the import bill of CKD and SKD vehicles declined to $550.127 million during the period under review against $713.419 million imported by the local automotive industry during the same period last year.

At the same time, import of complete build-up unit (CBU) cars also registered a negative growth 13.89 per cent during the first 11 months of the current fiscal year over the same period of the last year.

In absolute terms, the value of the imported CBU cars stood at $409.462 million during the July-May period this year against $475.525 million worth CBU cars imported during the same period last year.

A further break-up showed that the decline in imports (CDK and SKD) was due to 7.05 per cent decline in import of buses, trucks, and 29.20 per cent cars. However, import of motorcycles went up by 1.09 per cent.

In the CBU condition, import of buses, trucks dipped by 20.51 per cent and motor cars 11.04 per cent during the first 11 months of the current fiscal year over last year. However, import of motorcycles was up 106.39 per cent.
