PESHAWAR, June 4: Hindi language is one of the richest regional languages and many good books in India are written and printed in the Devnagri script, according to vice-chancellor of Peshawar University Prof Dr Haroon Rasheed.

He was addressing a ceremony to inaugurate a course in the Devnagri script at the university’s Urdu department here on Monday.

The university, he said, was fully committed to the promotion of languages and linguistics, adding that it had taken practical steps in this regard.

Dr Rasheed said that experts of various languages had played a pivotal role in the growth of quality education and research, adding that the Urdu department had made rich academic and literary contributions.

He said the introduction of the course would benefit Hindi literature, besides newspapers and magazines.

Earlier, chairman of the department of Urdu Dr Sabir Kalorvi explained the aims and objectives of the course and said that the first batch would be awarded certificates after three months.

Registrar Dr Shakeel Ahmad, former director of the Pushto Academy Prof Dr Raj Wali Shah Khattak, director of the vice-chancellor’s secretariat Tariq Mahmood, provost Dr Farooq Swati, Dr Zahoor Ahmad Awan, principal of the Islamia College, Peshawar, Prof Nisar Mohammad Nisar, director of administration Iftekhar Hussain Khan, Prof Abdul Rasheed, principal of the University Public School Prof Malik Naz, Dr Nazir Tabassum, Dr Robina Shaheen and administrative officer Badshah Munir Bukhari also attended the function.—APP
