JHANG, June 1: Judges in Jhang did not perform their duty on Friday in protest against, what they called, indecent remarks by some lawyers towards them during a protest rally on Wednesday.
DBA members shouted ‘derogatory’ slogans outside the district and sessions court and locked the courtroom after the judge had dismissed a habeas corpse petition filed by Shorkot lawyer Shoaib Sipra for the release of his brother from police detention.
The matter was resolved on Wednesday after negotiations between Additional Sessions Judge Allah Bakhsh Dhadla and DBA members. The lawyers did not appear in courts on Thursday following an appeal from the Pakistan Bar Council.
But the Friday’s strike by judges shocked lawyers, who called the strike unjustified as matter had been resolved.
Addressing the DBA general body meeting, DBA President Ghulam Fareed Naul criticised the district sessions court judge, saying he was sabotaging the struggle of lawyers for the independence of judiciary. He also accepted the responsibility for locking the courtroom.
