Two traders shot deadby ‘rivals’

GUJRANWALA, May 3: Two traders were shot dead by unidentified gunmen in the Sabzi Mandi area while on a morning walk on Thursday.

Eyewitnesses said Khalifa Imtiaz and Tahir of Katch Khiali were walking after saying Fajr prayers when armed men opened fire on them with automatic weapons. Khalifa died on the spot while Tahir breathed his last on way to Mayo Hospital, Lahore.

Their families alleged that their rivals killed them.

Meanwhile, the traders of Urdu Bazaar went on shutter down strike against the murder of their colleagues and took out a procession. They were carrying banners and placards and raised slogans against police. They demanded immediate arrest of the killers and threatened that they would lock the bazaar in next phase of protest.

Senior police officers reached the spot and assured the protesters that the accused would be arrested soon.

SENT TO JAIL: Six leaders and activists of opposition parties who were arrested by police to foil their participation in Islamabad rally in support of Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry two days ago, were sent to Camp Jail, Lahore, for 30 days under MPO 16 on Thursday.

Markazi Jamiat Ahle Hadith naib amir Maulana Naeem Butt, Shabab-i-Milli district president Furqan Butt, Naushera Virkan PML-N Nazir Ahmad and tehsil PPP president Rana Shabbir Haider Mubarik and Rao Ishtiaq Ahmad Khan were preparing to leave for Islamabad when police arrested them from their residences.

ROBBERY: Nine robbers took away cash and jewellery worth Rs700,000 from the house of an industrialist in Baghbanpura on Thursday.

Police said four of the nine outlaws entered the house of Haji Mushtaq by scaling boundary wall. They held the family at gunpoint, collected 45 tolas of gold jewellery, Rs60,000 in cash, three mobile phones and other valuables and escaped.

Baghbanpura police have registered a case.

ARRESTED: A police party arrested some 10 heirs of proclaimed offenders on Thursday when they managed to escape after opening fire on law enforcers in Nat Kalan village, Ghakkhar town.

Reports said that the police team, led by SHO Amir Gondal, conducted a raid on the houses of absconders for their arrest. But, they opened fire on police from the rooftops of their houses and managed to escape when police returned the fire. The police arrested 10 heirs of the absconders who were later released on the instance of influential people.
