KARACHI: Uses of blood, products explained

By Our Staff Reporter

KARACHI, May 3: The Sindh Government Hospital in Korangi, with the collaboration of the public health department, organised a seminar on ‘Optimal use of blood and blood products’ on its premises on Wednesday.

Speaking at the seminar, Dr Furrukh Hassan, vice-president of the South Asian Association for Blood Transfusion, said that there was no place for whole blood transfusion in modern blood transfusion medicine. Blood components, including the packed cells, fresh frozen plasma, platelets and old plasma could be used by single unit, benefiting several patients.

Dr Nazma Asad said that anaemia was very common in pregnancy, causing fatigue, loss of appetite, shortness of breath and swelling. She said that blood transfusions (packed cells) should be given only in case of emergency when anaemia was found not responding to medicines. Dr Abdul Shakoor and Dr Shakeel A. Siddiqui also spoke.

OBSTETRICIANS: Executive members of the Society of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists of Pakistan were elected here on Wednesday, says a press release.

The office-bearers of the society already elected unopposed are: President — Dr Shershah Syed; Vice Presidents — Prof Arif Tajammul (Punjab), Prof Shehnaz Akhtar (NWFP) and Prof Tasneem Ashraf (Balochistan); Secretary General — Dr Ayesha K. Nasir; Joint Secretary — Dr Fareed Zafar and Treasurer — Dr Nighat Shah.
