Friendly Fire set to blow away rivals at KRC

By Anwar Zuberi

KARACHI, April 28: Fancied three-year-old bay filly Friendly Fire, who finally exposed her hidden qualities last weekend, looks set to repeat the winning feat when the Gymkhana race meeting takes place at the Karachi Racecourse on Sunday.

After two dismal runs she posted a facile 10 lengths victory over Check Mate under champion rider M. Nasir.

She is likely to be chased by two fillies – NYX and Queen Of Mirwa - for the places. The running of chestnut colt Lava Man should be watched.

Shah Mardan Shah Pir Pagara’s mare Butter Fly, if tried, should make amends to claim the days feature event. The five furlongs last race has a field of eight runners barring last minute withdrawls. She was beaten by Sindh Malook in her previous run last month.

However, she has to overcome bay filly Gwenivare and colt Moon Raker to grab honours.

There seems to be a three-way tie for reigning supreme in the supporting event. The horses in contention are filly Lady Conqueror, mare Patricia and filly Maid’s Causeway. The first and third belonged to the same connection and it has to be seen that which horse is on job.

After narrowly beaten to second slot by a slightest margin of Head by Red Rufus, Irfan Mehdi’s mare Sweet Touch is our fancy to pick up spoils in top division of class VII.

Her likely challengers are filly Foolish Pleasure and chestnut Killer Instincts.

Bay colt Check Mate has started producing results after successive failures. This is evident from two second positions in the previous meetings. He may end the victory jinx when he runs alongside 14 runners on Sunday.

Fillies — Gul Bano and Breaking News and bay horse Rokara are likely to oblige punters by making amends in the remaining races. Filly Bewitched, if allowed to run on merit, may pull off a surprise in the second race.
