Border mine kills woman

By Our Correspondent

SIALKOT, April 24: A young woman was killed in a landmine blast on the border area of Bhojpur on Tuesday.

Ms Saima Bibi, 25, was working in a farm when a huge explosion took place. She died on the spot. She was the mother of a five-year-old boy.

Sources believed that the blast had been caused by an anti-tank mine planted along the border by the army during the 2001-02 standoff with India, when the neighbouring country had deployed its forces there after an attack on the Indian parliament building in New Delhi.

A number of people have since been hit by landmines, although authorities claim that the area had been cleared. Another combing operation was launched in the area on Tuesday, sources said.
