CPNE condemns action against TV channel

By A Reporter

KARACHI, April 24: The Council of Pakistan Newspaper Editors (CPNE) has condemned the issuance of show-cause notice to the Aaj TV channel by the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (Pemra) and termed it most deplorable and unwarranted.

The issue was discussed at length at an emergent meeting on Tuesday.

The meeting resolved to resist all attempts to intimidate the electronic media and defend the media’s freedom.

A strongly worded resolution stated that CPNE members consider freedom of the print and electronic media as one, and any attempt by the government to suppress news coverage by the media shall be resisted with all the resources at the command of the CPNE’.

The meeting rejected all actions by Pemra that restricted freedom of the press, access to information and the right of the public to know the truth.

The CPNE decided to become a party in the case filed against the Pemra ordinance in the Lahore High Court.

The resolution also called for the immediate withdrawal of the show cause notice against Aaj TV.

PFUJ FOR PROBE: The Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists (PFUJ) has also expressed concern over the manner in which Pemra is ‘using its muscle to gag the electronic media’, calling upon the parliament to investigate the watchdog’s conduct.
