KARACHI, April 22: A candle-lit peace vigil was organised by a group striving for the settlement of street children to mark the International Earth Day on Sunday evening.
The vigil, held in front of the press club here, was organised by the Initiator Human Development Foundation. Dozens of street children, activists and people from different spheres of society participated in the vigil.
IHDF president Rana Asif Habib, speaking on the occasion, said earth has the sole worth for all the living things but only humans had the sense and responsibility to safeguard and protect it.
“What is urgent is to take concrete steps on climate change now before it’s too late,” he said.
“We, the IHDF people, and street children urge all to keep environment free from the pollution,” said a resolution adopted by the gathering.
On the occasion, children chanted slogans ‘Every day is Earth Day’. They were carrying posters and banners inscribed with slogans highlighting the need for healthy environment. They also distributed leaflets reminding people of their relation with the soil and planet and calling for strengthening and consolidating this relation.
