PEC to benefit greatly from Shaharyar’s letter: Ijaz Butt

By Mohammad Yaqoob

LAHORE, April 17: It took six days for Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) to deliver an important letter of former Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Shaharyar M Khan to World Cup's Performance Evaluation Committee (PEC) which would clarify his stance on the probe.

Shaharyar is yet to appear before the PEC since he has some reservations over the composition of the probe committee and tried to convey the same to PEC in writing last week but the letter never reached the committee, thanks to some efficient handling of matters by PCB.

"I received the letter on Tuesday morning which was coincidentally followed by a call from Shaharyar who informed me that he had sent the letter on April 12," chairman PEC, Ijaz Butt told Dawn on Tuesday.

"I confirmed to Shaharyar that I had received the letter, just five minutes before his call," said Ijaz, a former Test cricketer. "I also spoke to a PCB official later about it who confirmed that Shaharyar’s letter had been received on April 12 but it could not be delivered due to other pressing assignments."

He said Shaharyar had delivered the letter by hand and a delay in its receipt had unnecessarily created a misunderstanding between the PEC and the former chairman.

When contacted, PCB’s media director Dr Ahsan Hameed Malik said the letter was ‘probably’ received on Monday and was delivered to the committee the next day.

Ijaz explained that Shaharyar laid out some good points and reasons which could help the probe committee. "I believe the letter will help us a lot in finding out the real reasons behind the debacle in the World Cup," he said.

When asked whether Shaharyar was willing to appear before the committee at this stage, Ijaz said the former chairman still had reservations over Saleem Altaf’s presence on the panel. He, however, said the committee had sent questions in writing to Shaharyar and would soon receive the answers.

The PEC will resume its hearing on Wednesday here after a three-day break which will see senior batsman Mohammad Yousuf and fast bowlers Shoaib Akhtar and Mohammad Asif recording their statements.
