Army edge past Sindh for third soccer gold

KARACHI, April 13: Sindh gave holders Pakistan Army a testing time before going down 7-6 in sudden death shoot-out session in the soccer final of National Games at People Stadium on Friday.

The win gave Pakistan Army their third successive gold in the National Games. The tense and absorbing final watched by sizeable crowd failed to produce any goal in the stipulated time and the extra-time failed to break the stalemate.

Referee Imtiaz Shah then asked both the teams to compete in penalty-shoot out. Army showed better commitment and marksmanship and won the tense session 7-6 in sudden death.

The two-hour play saw the appearance of several international stars like Imran Hussain, Jaffar Khan, Abdul Aziz, Farooq Shah, Naseer Ahmed, Adnan Bari who put up stubborn display but poor finishing remained a major drawback with both teams during the match.

Wapda secured a bronze medal by beating Punjab in the playoff. -—APP
