Army, Wapda clinch men, women trophies: More new records at Games
KARACHI, April 13: Army athletes maintained their ascendancy in men while Wapda clinched honours in women in the 30th National Games athletic meet which concluded at the PSB Coaching Centre on Friday.
The soldiers virtually ruled the men track and field events when they finished with a rich harvest of 20-12-4 medals to top with 521 points. In all, 22 golds, as many silvers and bronzes were at stake in men’s event.
Wapda secured 226 points as they could only muster 2-8-9 medals to finish runners-up.
Contrary to men, Army and Wapda fought tooth and nail for the supremacy in women’s section. In the end, it was Wapda who collected 362 points from eight golds, 12 silvers and 11 bronzes to return with flying colours. Army was placed second with a tally of 319 points from 10-5-5- medals.
Two more national records were shattered on the concluding day. Wapda’s Nadia Nazir, bronze medallist of 100m and 200m sprints, set a new national record in 400m hurdles returning with a timing of 61.8 seconds. She eclipsed the existing record of 62.35 seconds which stand in the name of Fozia Aurangzeb established by her at Patiala, in Indian Punjab on Dec 10, 2004.
The second record came in men 4x100m relay when the Army quartet sprint home in 40.2 seconds to better the previous record of 40.36 set at Islamabad on April 6, 2004.
Humera Akmal and Zafar Iqbal, both from Army, had earlier set new records in pole vault (women) and triple jump (men).
Nosheen Parveen of Army clinched the women’s heptathlon gold with a tally of 3498 points. The silver went to Wapda’s Ghazala Sardar (2684) while Humera Akmal (2682) earned the bronze.
Mohammad Irfan gave Army the decathlon gold with 5924 points. Mohammad Azam (Army) and Tehseen (PAF) got silver and bronze.
