ISLAMABAD, April 7: Chairman of the Senate Committee on Rules of Procedure and Privileges Senator Syed Tahir Hussain Mashhadi has observed that rules must be so designed that they ensure supremacy of the constitution, and strengthen the parliament and rule of law in the country.

Mr Mashhadi was presiding over a meeting of the Senate Committee on Rules of Procedure and Privileges at the Parliament House, says a press release.

The meeting considered various proposed amendments to the Rules of Procedure and Conduct of Business in the Senate, 1988, and unanimously approved some amendments for incorporation in the existing rules.

He said the purpose of the proposed amendments was betterment and improvement in the existing rules to ensure smooth functioning of the Upper House.

He said while proposing amendments to the existing rules, “we must not lose sight of our future requirements and must make sure that the nation would continue to tread the path of democracy”.

The committee unanimously endorsed the proposal of the members with regard to incorporating the provision that “if a member raises an objection that a bill is repugnant to the injunctions of Islam, the question shall be referred to the Council of Islamic Ideology (CII) for advice as to whether the bill is or is not repugnant to the injunctions of Islam”.
