KARACHI: Lyari goes dry as summer begins

By Our Staff Reporter

KARACHI, April 4: With the beginning of summer, water crisis has hit many parts of Lyari Town and residents of some affected localities have complained that they are getting contaminated water.

Most households along either side of D.D. Chaudhry Road, Yousaf Haroon Road and Fidha Husain Sheikha Road are not being supplied water for the past two weeks. The localities used to get water on alternative days but that too has been stopped.

The residents of Baghdadi Saifi Lane have complained that normal water supply to the area has been stopped for the last two weeks and they only get subsoil water.

In a letter submitted to the authorities concerned, the Mohalla committee members of D.D. Chaudhry Road complained that the locality was once again being faced with water crisis. “Our area remains without water during the current hot and sultry weather,” the residents said, adding that people visited the Moosa Lane Pumping Station several times but to no avail.

“A good number of complaints have already been sent to the concerned authorities of water department, but all our requests went unheeded. We usually get sewage mixed water and then all of sudden the supply of contaminated water also stops,” they said.

A survey of the area shows around 200 to 300 households affected by the problem. A number of people, especially children and elderly, had been suffering from abdominal pain after consuming the contaminated water.

In Baghdadi, people living around Lyari Telephone Exchange have complained of acute shortage of water. They said water issue had been lingering on despite the repeated requests made to the higher authorities.

They deplored that their complaints and reminders sent to relevant authorities over many years had failed to get positive response.
