Big Show keeps punters happy

By Anwar Zuberi

KARACHI, March 25: Favourite four-year-old bay filly Big Show lived up to her top billing when she landed Pakistan Day Cup in the Gymkhana race meeting at the Karachi Racecourse on Sunday.

Ridden by M. Nasir, champion rider of 2006, she posted a three-and-a-half lengths victory over another filly Eswarah to oblige punters by claiming days’ honours.

Abhi Abhi secured third place while King Of Sanghar completed the frame as seven contestants battled it out for the glory.

The half-money favourite Big Show trailed the field in the one mile race until the final band. She overtook the opponent’s one after the other after getting into straight for home and in a late burst won with ease.

Originally, this was the fifth race of the days schedule but was changed with the seventh at the eleventh hour for the convenience of sponsor.

Dawn had five out of nine winners including winner of the cup besides quite a number of places.

Nasir was the pick of the day among riders as he completed a treble. In addition to the cup, his other two winners were Truf Shot and Sindh Malook.

The triumphs of Big Show, Truf Show and Sindh Malook also brought joy for Rajars and trainer Mushtaq.

Fancied Truf Shot sprinted to four lengths victory over Arab Hi Arab to make it four on trot while Sindh Malook edged out Moon Raker by two-and-a-half lengths to register second win in a row.

Earlier, Syed Ali Gohar Shah’s bay mare Jet Zone and Syed Ismail Shah’s bay filly Lady Conqueror romped home in style.

Ali Ehsan powered Jet Zone to facile five lengths victory over Auzy while Lady Conqueror with Ghulam Shabbir II astride beat Sharp Cat by one-and-a-half length. The race was delayed for about 45 minutes for change of rider on Sharp Cat.

M. Waseem II piloted outsider Lucky View to one lengths victory to pull off the first upset.

Rider Arshad also stole the limelight when he won two back-to-back races to complete a double. His winners were filly Make Millions and colt With Interest.

Three-year-old chestnut colt Shiracco conjured up his maiden win when he beat Midas Touch by seven lengths.

It sounds strange that the same horse finished on the board almost 20 lengths behind the winner in his last run and on Sunday he won like a champion. The next race meeting is schedule for Saturday.
