PESHAWAR, March 3: The provincial disaster management strategy has been finalised, NWFP Governor Lt-Gen (R) Ali Muhammad Jan Aurakzai was told here on Saturday during a presentation.

Home Secretary Badshah Gul Wazir briefed the governor about the steps taken by the provincial government. Underlining the need for creating public awareness about how to deal with any emergency, the governor called for chalking out a strategy for disaster management in Fata.

Highlighting various features of the proposed strategy, the home secretary said the disaster management plan included preventive and mitigation measures, adding that it also stressed upon adopting an early warning system, creating disaster awareness and enhancing the capacity of respective departments and organisations to confront any emergency situation.

He said that district disaster management authorities were also being set up.

Secretary to the Governor Azmat Hanif and Secretary (A&C Fata) Sikandar Qayum also attended the presentation.

The governor urged the need for an effective implementation mechanism to achieve the desired results and said that skill development was also important for properly tackling any emergent situation in the wake of a disaster, adding that a comprehensive plan was needed in addition to precautionary measures.

The National Disaster Management Commission is scheduled to hold a meeting soon in Islamabad under the prime minister.—PPI
