ATTOCK, March 3: President Gen Pervez Musharraf said on Saturday that some foreign elements living in mountainous areas of the country were involved in acts of terror not only in the country but across the world and they had put Pakistan in a dangerous position.

The president was speaking at a gathering of notables in the Kund village of the Attock district.

"People have come here from outside. They are living in our mountains and spreading terrorism not just in Pakistan but in the entire world," the president said.

Gen Musharraf appealed to the people to reject extremists and terrorists, adding that there was no external threat to the country but there was a need to tackle internal unrest created by these elements.

“There is need to project the real image of Islam, as some elements are associating Islam with terrorism which is a wrong concept”.

He said there were some seminaries that were spreading sectarianism and supporting suicide bombers and terrorists.

He called upon the people to vote for the "positive forces" who supported his government's policies.

"If you want continuity of the development, vote for pro-government people. They will, in turn, vote for me".

Referring to economy, the president said the country’s revenue collection would be raised to Rs4500 billion by 2015 from the existing Rs900 billion, and the burden of taxes would be gradually reduced.

He said the revenue collection had been increased from Rs300 billion to Rs900 billion during the past six years.

He said it was the responsibility of the government to improve living conditions of the people by providing facilities at the grassroots level, and in order to achieve this purpose, the government had set three broad objectives: end poverty, control price hike and eliminate unemployment.
