Khalid Khawaja shifted to high security prison

By Our Staff Reporter

RAWALPINDI, Feb 22: Khalid Khawaja, a former official of Inter Services Intelligence (ISI) and human rights activist, was shifted from Adiala Jail to the high security prison, Faisalabad, on Thursday, Dawn has learnt.

He was arrested by Aabpara police on January 26 on the charge of inciting people against the government, distributing hate material and sabotaging negotiations between the government and ulema on Madressah Hafsa issue.

Security sources said that Mr Khawaja’s bail application was accepted by the Additional District and Sessions Judge Nisar Ahmad Baig on Wednesday. He was to be released on Thursday but the prison authorities shifted him to the high security prison, Faisalabad, on the instructions of government.

On Wednesday, Mr Khawaja was produced before the court of additional district and sessions judge. After hearing arguments of Mr Khawaja’s lawyer, the judge accepted the bail application and ordered his release.

The government had ordered construction of two high security prisons in Punjab. The second high security prison is under construction at Adiala jail.
