PESHAWAR, Feb 10: High altitude areas of the NWFP and tribal belt received snowfall as widespread rains continued in the region on Saturday, bringing down mercury in many areas.

The Bajaur Agency was the worst-hit area where five to seven feet snow was recorded during the last 24 hours, blocking Ghakhi and Nawagai Pass for traffic.

Torrential rains paralysed life in the agency as all bazaars and business centres remained closed. Heavy downpour also damaged shanty houses in the area.

Heavy snowfall blocked the Razmak-Esha road in the North Waziristan Agency for traffic. It also damaged the main transmission line, disrupting power supply to many areas of North and South Waziristan.

According to reports, the main tower of the Razmak radio station had collapsed due to snowfall. Torrential rains also caused landslide, blocking Wana-Jandola and Wana-Kanigoram roads.

Mansehra, Kohistan, Battagram and Swat districts received light and moderate rains.

According to the local Met office, Peshawar recorded 28 millimetres rain since Saturday morning. Rainwater flooded roads and streets in the city, while low-lying areas were submerged by filthy rainwater, causing inconvenience for residents.

Rains also disrupted power and gas supply to many areas of Peshawar, where minimum temperature was 12 degree centigrade.

Bannu and Dera Ismail Khan received 45mm and 22mm rains, respectively.

Flights between Peshawar and Chitral were also suspended due to bad weather.
