Little headway on climate

ESSEN, Feb 10: Group of Seven finance chiefs made little headway here on energy and global warming questions, the German finance minister disclosed on Saturday at the end of a meeting that closely followed a major warning on climate change from the United Nations.

“We did not reach clear conclusions,” Peer Steinbrueck told a press conference at the end of a two-day meeting of finance ministers and central bank governors from the Group of Seven.

He said G7 countries, Britain, France, Canada, Germany, Italy, Japan and the US, had more work ahead of them if they were to make progress on climate issues at a summit in June, when they would be joined by Russia in the Group of Eight. Germany, which holds the current rotating G8 presidency, has made energy a key point in its mandate.—AFP
