Pakistan to send mission to Antarctica

By Habib Khan Ghori

KARACHI, Jan 26: Pakistan, which has not undertaken any expedition to the Antarctic continent since 1992, is likely to send a scientific mission by December 2007 after it decided to reactivate its Antarctica Treaty membership.

The decision was taken in a recent meeting of the National Maritime Affairs Coordination Committee.

The committee was informed that according to the Antarctica Treaty, Pakistan’s membership was not possible as a consultative or an acceding member since Pakistan had not undertaken any expedition to Antarctica for more than 14 years. It observed that Pakistan should participate in Antarctica activities and join as a consultative or acceding member of the treaty.
