The Excise and Taxation Department has been given a recovery target of Rs1044 million in the current financial year 2006-07 that was Rs25 million higher than the overall recoveries made during the last fiscal year.
Last year, the department achieved the assigned target by collecting Rs1,019 million taxes against these heads, an official said.
The tax collecting agency, said the official, was in the process of introducing reforms in the tax administration as envisaged under Provincial Reforms Programme (PRP) to widen the tax net.
The incumbent MMA government had announced exemptions in property tax, land tax, water tax under industrial and agriculture policies respectively that according to the official had put extra burden on the tax collecting agencies in achieving the recovery targets.
The official, however, hoped the reform process would strengthen revenue mobilisation through steps being taken for improving tax administration and enable the agency to achieve the target set for the current fiscal year.
