Tanneries’ water a threat to life, soil

By Our Correspondent

SIALKOT, Jan 18: Contaminated water emitting from tanneries located at the area between Upper Chenab and Marala Ravi Link canals near Sambrial is infiltrating into water table, diminishing fertility of soil and posing acute health hazards to the people.

This was revealed in a recent survey conducted by a local NGO — Baidarie — on the topic of “hazards posed by the use of contaminated water and need of safe drinking water.”

NGO head Arshad Mehmood Mirza told newsmen at Sambrial on Thursday that the use of polluted water had considerably moved graph of the water-borne diseases upward. He said the locals had already asked the government to immediately implement relevant rules and regulations, besides forcing factory owners to treat the polluted water before pouring it into water channels.

Criticising the Sambrial tehsil municipal administration, he said the local people had time and again demanded immediate installation of water filtration plants and removal of rusted supply lines.

When contacted, Sambrial tehsil nazim Nasir Khan Ghuman pledged to ensure early installation of water filtration plants on a priority basis.

SCHOOL BODIES: The district government has allocated Rs520 million for timely completion of small schemes in all government primary and elementary schools through school management committees.

District nazim Akmal Cheema disclosed this while speaking at a ceremony held at government boys high school, Daska on Thursday to give cheques of development funds worth Rs17 million.

He said the management committees were playing an important role in timely solution to problems of schools on a self-help basis. The nazim also distributed `Talent cash awards’ among students.

WOMEN CENTRES: The government has announced establishment of six women development centres at Sialkot, Daska, Sambrial and Pasrur and allocated Rs4.2 million for the purpose.

This was said by nazim Akmal Cheema while talking to newsmen here at Daska after laying foundation stone of a Rs4 million women development centre.
