KARACHI, Jan 14: Despite a brilliant 96 by Saeed bin Nasir, Karachi Urban were struggling t stave defeat against Peshawar in the Quaid-i-Azam Trophy Gold League match at the National Stadium here on Sunday.
Peshawar closed the penultimate day of the four-day encounter at 22 without loss in pursuit of a modest target of 231 after Riffatullah Mohmand survived a vociferous shout for LBW off left-arm paceman Malik Aftab.
Starting their second innings – having conceded a first-innings lead of 46 runs – on resumption of play on Sunday, Karachi Urban lost wickets steadily. But Saeed, who once was on fringe of Test selection not long ago, staged a one-man rearguard act.
The slim right-hander was ninth man to be dismissed to a contentious catch in the gulley by substitute Nawaz Ahmed. Umpire Akbar Khan adjudged Saeed after consulting his colleague Iqbal Butt.
Until that crucial moment Saeed looked calm throughout his 273-minute stay during which he stroked eight fours and two sixes while facing 215 deliveries.
In fact, Saeed was not the batsman to go in dubious circumstances; Imran Javed was earlier given out after Iqbal Butt ‘confirmed’ from Akbar that Shoaib Khan had held the catch centimetres off the turf in the slips.
The only substantial partnership in the Karachi Urban innings was provided by Saeed and tail-ender Tanvir Ahmed. The pair added 74 for the eighth-wicket in almost two hours before Tanvir departed for a spirited 33, a 102-ball which included four boundaries.
Skipper Hasan Raza, hampered by a knee injury, was clearly out of sorts in making six before holing out to mid-off.
Waqar Ahmed, the left-arm paceman, was once the best of the bowlers as he took three for 61 to complete a match-haul of nine for 111. Skipper Arshad Khan, the ex-Test off-spinner, claimed three for 88 in 26 overs.
