LAHORE, Dec 26: A card of five events, looking competitive has been drawn up for the mid-week Lahore Gymkhana races to be held at the Racecourse on Wednesday.
In all, 53 runners will be taking part in five events consisting of moderate fields.
With Eid-ul-Azha being celebrated on Monday, coinciding with the dawn of the New Year, the number of acceptors has remained static, which has been the case during the previous gymkhana races. All races will be run over the sprinting distance of 1000m.
The feature event, the Faisalabad Plate, a class V division 1 and 11, combined handicap race, has ten runners, if there are no last-minute withdrawals. It looks a three-horse contest. Those in contention are a colt, Desert Prince, a filly Shim Jim and a chestnut horse Babboo The Great.
Desert Prince owned by Mirza Khurshid Baig is a beautifully bred son of Bedouin Invader out-of-Four Aces, and is still to break his duck on the victory performance static's table. He ran a good third behind Lucifer, and Chanela in the Sialkot Plate, a term for thoroughbred colts and fillies, maidens, over 1100 metres on Sunday last.
Shim Jimis filly from the deceased English sire, Cisco Wells out-of-Let Get Going and have won two races besides a second.
Chestnut horse Babboo The Great is a speedster and was beaten by Aaja Bulbul over 1100 metres on Dec 20 last.
By any standards, Desert Prince looks a better animal in all respects, bloodline, form and handicap provided he gets an honest and efficient rider because being in-experienced, he needs proper handling. Lady luck seems to be smiling on Baig, on his first try out, he backed him for a place and the colt promptly obliged. This will be the fifth and last race of the day.
Prince Salman, Blue Fire and Redouble attract among the seventeen acceptors drawn for the third race. The first named is a classy colt and should win the race. His close rival should be Redouble.
In the other three events there are four or more chance horses in each and winner picking may be a difficult task for the punters.
