Qubilai steers team to title victory

LAHORE, Dec 17: Four-goal Shah Qubilai Alam guided Sukh Chan to annex R G Hyder Polo Cup, defeating Punjab Police after a thrilling final 8-6 1/2 on Sunday.

The winners started the game in style making a solid start 4-1 1/2 in the first chukker. Waqar Nadir, who scored two, drew first blood scoring a field goal.

Police, with a half-goal handicap, retaliated when Saqib Khan Khawani struck with a 30-yard penalty hit. Qubilai Alam then scored back-to-back goals before Waqar pumped in his second as the winners dominated Completely.

The second chukker saw, Sukh Chan remain in front (5- 2 1/2)as both sides scored a goal each. First Usman Hayee added a field goal to Police's tally. Two-goal Taimur Ali Malik increased the lead of winners with a fine field goal on solo effort.

Police came closer in the third chukker (6-4 1/2) as Faaiz Rahim Khan earned one goal with a long lofted shot while Saqib Khakwani added a field goal. Qubilai struck his third goal, converting a spot penalty near the goalpost for the winners.

In the fourth chukker, each side added two goals each. Saqib scored both for Police. For the winners, Qubilai, converted his second 30-yard penalty hit to score his fourth goal while Taimur scored his second off a field attempt to complete the tally.

Three-goal Hassan Ali Farrukh helped Cosa Nostra seized third place, beating Master Paints 6 1/2-4 in the subsidiary final.
