David eyes revenge over Chiu

DOHA, Dec 13: Double world champion Nicol David of Malaysia cruised into the Asian Games women's singles squash final on Wednesday where she will meet the woman who dethroned her as champion four years ago.

David needed just 21 minutes to crush the feeble resistance of Hong Kong's Pui Hin 9-0, 9-1, 9-0 and will face Rebecca Chiu, also of Hong Kong, for the gold medal on Thursday.

Chiu saw off Malaysia's Sharon Wee 9-6, 9-1, 9-3 in her semi-final.

Four years ago in Busan, Chiu stunned an out-of-sorts David to take the title the Malaysian had won as a 15-year-old in Bangkok four years earlier.

“That was a big turning point in my career,” said David, the top seed and world number one.

“I have learnt so much since then and I'm in good shape compared to four years ago.

“I will have to bring my game to another level. I've had a great year on the professional circuit, so I have to take all that energy and put it into the final.”

Chiu knows that a repeat of her 2002 success is unlikely on Thursday.

“She is the world number one. I beat her four years ago but I haven't defeated her since,” she said.

Later on Wednesday, the men's singles final line-up will be known.

Top seed Mohamad Azlan Iskander of Malaysia faces Pakistan's Mansoor Zaman while defending champion Ong Beng Hee, also of Malaysia, meets India's Saurav Ghosal.—AFP
