Sindh protest goes unheeded, say poets

By Our Correspondent

KHAIRPUR, Dec 11: A Mushaira was held by the Sindhi Adabi Sangat on Sunday night to pay tribute to renowned poet Dr Tanvir Abbasi in his native town Sobhodero. The Mushaira was presided over by Tajal Bewas, while Fatah Malik and the general secretary of the SAS, Sindh, Zulfiqar Siyal, were the chief guests.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr Bewas and Mr Malik said the British rulers had taken control of Sindh from Sindhi rulers and the process was continuing.

They said islands were being snatched from their residents and no protest or argument of Sindhi people was being heard. They said fishermen were being forcibly made homeless.

They said hundreds of acres of land in Punjab had been made cultivable by the Tarbela Dam and now the establishment was planning to snatch irrigation water from Sindh through the construction of the Kalabagh dam. They said poets and writers should play their role in the struggle for the rights of Sindh.

Mr Siyal said seminars in the name of Shah Abdul Latif Bhittai, Sachal Sarmast, Shaikh Ayaz and Tanvir Abbasi were held in universities but the SAS was not invited to the events.

Mushtaq Phul, Manzoor Ujjan, Shakeel Malik, Rahim Bux Abbasi, Lalan Channa and others presented their poetry in the Mushaira.
