Inside Story makes it two in a row

By Anwar Zuberi

KARACHI, Dec 10: Fancied two-year-old bay colt, Inside Story, added yet another feather in his cap when he claimed Sapphire Stakes by posting a facile two-and-a-half lengths victory over his closest opponent Sir Jee in the Gymkhana race meeting at Karachi Racecourse on Sunday.

He had won the Sprinter’s Cup under jockey M. Nasir by edging out Phapha Kutni by three lengths last week.

This was Nasir’s first triumph of the day as he came out with a splendid treble. His other two winners were chestnut colt, Sindh Malook and bay colt, The Conqueror’s.

As predicted, three-year-old chestnut filly, Eswarah, with Arshad astride beat another filly Big Show by half length to land the Colts and Fillies Trial Cup.

Rider Ghulam Shabbir II pulled off a major upset when he galloped five-year-old bay horse, Al Faris, to seven lengths victory over filly, Makina, to win Quaid-i-Azam Trial Cup. He won the 10 furlongs race in a smart time of two min 5 2/5 seconds.

He took a flying start overcoming a bad habit of a late starter which he had developed lately.

Dawn had six winners in a card of 10 races while three were beaten to second place and the last completed the board.

Rider Mohammad Essa also came out with a double by winning back to back races. First he piloted Fair Boy to victory in the opener followed by Al Zarrar’s triumph in the next race. Both the races raised quite a few eyebrows as rider of Sher-e-Awan, Faiz Mohammad, did not allowed his mount to run on merit and was penalised with two week suspension and a fine of Rs30,000.

Similarly, public fancy and odds on favourite filly, Kat Mandu, was throttled all the way by experienced and seasoned rider Ghulam Shabbir II but he managed to second place finishing three lengths behind Al Zarrar. The rider was spared by the Racing Committee.

Second favourite bay filly, Sweet Smile, beat fancied colt Dubawi by six lengths.

Three-year-old bay filly, Lady Conqueror and rank outsider Lucky Senior won the last two races. The former was ridden by Ghulam Shabbir II who also shared honours with his two contemporaries.

Meanwhile, the next Gymkhana race meeting will be held on Wednesday, deputy secretary KRC, Ali Akbar Shah Rashdi, told Dawn.
