Toru Khan to clash with Chan for top honours

By Aftab Gilani

LAHORE, Dec 9: Two leading three-year-old colts, Chan and Toru Khan, who have captured the attention of racing public by their high profile performances during the on-going Lahore Winter meetings clash at the Racecourse on Sunday.

Both are meeting for the first time in a classic battle for top honours in the Coca Cola Cup, a class I, II and III combined handicap race to be gone over 1600 metres, featuring the 15th winter meeting card of seven events.

Chan, a progeny of Wathbat Nashwan out-of-Warrio, has won five races in ten outings while Toru Khan already had six wins out of ten outings. Toru Khan's feat consists of a hat-trick of victories as well.

The field for the cup event consists of seven thoroughbreds including one English, who are all good performers having the credit of big triumphs to their names.

Although the honours may be won in the cup by either of the two contenders but an over-all supremacy is far from certain yet and hopefully, they will be meeting again beforel the Pakistan Derby 2007 to be held in March next.

Chan is the grandson of Nashwan (Blushing Groom-Height Of Fashion), who under jockey Willie Carson flew to win the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Diamond Stakes at Royal Ascot in 1989 in fastest time.

The pedigree-cum-present performance gives Chan an edge over Toru Khan, a son of Tora Bora who cannot be easily ignored. Both have not gone over 1600 metres in such a star-studded field. The competition will be tough which is good for racing as competition makes for good racing to enjoyed by the sports connoisseurs.

Chan owned by Syed Tasweer Shah is trained by Sohail Aziz and likely to be ridden by jockey Salah-ud-Din. Toru Khan will be flying colours of Huzaifa Shoaib and trained by Haji Ghualm Sarwar will probably be partnered by Aamir Parvaiz.

Chestnut filly, Trace Kim, who was beaten closely by Top Cat on November 12 last should make amends and win the supporting event, Khyber Cup for class IV division II to be contested over 1400 metres. Jut Bahadur and Golden Goal should fight for less remunerative positions. This will be the fourth race in racing order.

Three-year-old bay colt, Quwat, looks good in the second supporting event, a class IV division III handicap race to be run over 1400m.

The way the colt easily won the Khalid Bin Waleed Cup on November 26, there seems hardly any chance of his being beaten although there are some good rivals in Byron, Ferrari and Wendy Trace. Byron is on the course after a long time.

A card of seven races has been drawn for the day. Four events are to be contested over 1200m, two over 1400m and one over 1600m . The first race will be held at 1200 noon.
