Six literacy centres for child labourers
KASUR, Nov 28: Six literacy centres for 150 children will be set up in the district with the collaboration of ILO to eliminate child labour from tanneries. This was stated by Rana Mobeen, coordinator, NGO Sudhaar, while inaugurating the first centre in Kasur at Niaz Nagar.
Mr Mobeen said the establishment of six literacy centres was the joint effort of Sudhaar, district government, the ILO and the tanneries association.
He said the project aimed at providing education at their work place along with professional skills to the poverty stricken children who were forced to work at tanneries to supplement their family income.
Meanwhile, a district coordinating committee for the elimination of child labour meeting was also held at the Sudhaar main office. The meeting was attended by district labour officer Naeem Chaudhry, DHQ deputy medical officer Dr Rizwan Sadiq and social welfare officer Shahid Iqbal.
The committee established a body to monitor the project. The body would also make arrangements to provide healthcare facilities of working children along with their education and professional skills. — Correspondent
