PESHAWAR, Nov 23: The Peshawar High Court on Thursday granted bail to a man charged with committing street crimes, including mobile phone snatching.
Justice Raj Mohammad Khan asked Akhtar Gul to submit two sureties of Rs100,000 each.
Courts of the additional district and sessions judge and the judicial magistrate had declined bail to the accused.
The petitioner’s counsel contended that evidence on record was not enough to prove that his client was involved in street crimes.
He said the accused had been charged under section 382 of the Pakistan Penal Code dealing with theft by keeping a person in fear of death, and that offence carried sentence of 10 years imprisonment. He said he could not be charged under that section and he, at the most, could be charged with simple robbery, which carried a sentence of three years imprisonment, and thus he could be awarded bail.
