PML leader slams MMA’s ‘double standards’

By Our Reporter

KARACHI, Nov 19: Ruling Pakistan Muslim League (PML) Secretary-General Mushahid Hussain Sayed said on Sunday his party believed in issue-oriented politics and added that opposition parties had appreciated the PML’s policy as they extended cooperation to the government on issues of their concern.

Addressing a reception hosted by Sindh PML Information Secretary Haleem Adil Shaikh, Mr Mushahid said that the Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal leader Maulana Fazlur Rehman had helped the government in reaching the Waziristan peace accord while the Pakistan People’s Party had supported it on the issue of the Protection of Women Rights Bill, despite the fact that both were opposition parties.

He denied these achievements were the outcome of any deal with any of the opposition parties.

The PML leader accused the MMA of practising double standards, saying the alliance had recognised the Hasba Bill on the grounds that it had been passed by the NWFP Assembly with majority votes, but on the other hand it was not accepting the women’s rights bill though it too had been adopted by the National Assembly with majority votes.

“We will not accept the dictatorship of the minority,” he declared.

He said the PML believed in free and fair elections which was evident from the fact that contrary to tradition the ruling party lost the by-poll for the National Assembly seat vacated by federal minister Shaikh Rashid and recently on a Sindh Assembly seat in Shikarpur where a PPP candidate was declared winner.

The PML, he pointed out, accepted the result with open heart.

He said the government had held elections in Northern Areas in 2004, country-wide local bodies polls in 2005 and Azad Kashmir elections in 2006 on time, adding that the general elections would also be held in the country in 2007 as scheduled.

Mr Mushahid expressed the hope that Leader of Opposition in the National Assembly Fazlur Rehman would not resign and would continue to perform his responsibilities till November 2007.

He said Sindh Chief Minister Arbab Rahim had given the province a scandal-free administration and strengthened the PML at the grass-roots level .

He promised to take up the Sindh TV channel issue with the prime minister to lift ban on its transmission.

Speaking on the occasion, Chief Minister Rahim said unlike the past people in Sindh were now supporting the Pakistan Muslim League.
