Ulema vow to promote inter-faith harmony


PESHAWAR, Nov 16: Religious scholars on Thursday vowed to work for promotion of inter-faith harmony and discourage discord between different schools of thought.

They were addressing a peace conference which was organised by the Ulema and Mashaikh wing of the provincial PML.

The day-long conference was chaired by federal Minister for Political Affairs Amir Muqam. Pir Mohammad Khalid Raza of Zakori Sharif, president of the PML Ulema and Mashaikh wing, presided over the event.

The conference condemned terrorist incidents in Pakistan and all over the world and pledged to support President Gen Mussharaf in his endeavors against terrorism.

The conference demanded of the President to take strong measures to destroy terrorist elements.

The joint communique issued at the end of conference expressed the strong resolve to strengthen government hands in eradicating the curse of terrorism, extremism and sectarian problems and forging unity among all segments of the society.

It was also pledged to ensure spiritual training of the people in accordance with true spirit of Islam so that their real identity was highlighted for the promotion of tolerance, forbearance and moral values.

It also vowed to work for promoting peace, unity and brotherhood in religious seminaries, mosques and other worship places and refrain from spreading provocative literatures, materials and making fiery speeches so that feelings of the other faiths are not hurt.

Federal Minister for Political Affairs Amir Muqam said that Ulema and Mashaikhs had played a key role in Pakistan movement and also for promoting religious harmony.

Great responsibilities now lay on their shoulders to utilise their energies to highlight the true image of Islam and educate people and leaders here and abroad about the difference Jihad and terrorism. He also sought their help in cementing the bonds of social fabric in the society.

He impressed upon the ulema to propagate message of peace and tolerance from the pulpits of mosques and rostrum of religious seminaries and Darul Ulooms to purge sectarian tendencies.

The minister said the conferences would also be held across the country and Fata.

While referring to passage of the Women Protection Bill 2006, the minister said the bill was in accordance with Holy Quran and Sunnah. He said that no government could dare to amend the Constitution against Islamic tenets.

Referring to the adoption of the Hasba Bill by the NWFP Assembly, he said that MMA would wield it against its political opponents besides giving jobs to their favourites in the proposed Hasba institutions.

Pir Mohammad Raza Khalid of Zakori Sharif, Pir Shamsul Amin of Manki Sharif, Syed Sajjad Ali Shah, vice-president of the PML Ulema and Maskaikh wing Pir Charagdin Shah, Pir Syedul Amin, Maulana Mohammad Shoaib, Pir Syed Fida Hussain of Toba Tek Singh, Allama Shamsur Rehman Shamsi, Allama Abid Hussain Shakari and MNA Noorul Haq Qadri addressed the conference.—APP
