300 phones silent as cable catches fire

GUJRANWALA, Nov 14: Over 300 telephones went silent when an underground cable caught fire reportedly due to the negligence of a PTCL contractor in Satellite Town here on Tuesday.

Reports said the contractor was heating the bitumen to pour it on cable joints to save them from rust and moisture. The bitumen coating was necessitated after rain water made its way into several manholes and damaged cables.

An assistant engineer (telephones) said that the fresh damage was an outcome of contractor’s negligence. He promised to get the phones restored at the earliest.

HEALTH CENTRES: Around 13 women health centers have been established at divisional, district, tehsil and town levels.

District health officer Dr Riasat Ali said here on Tuesday that half a dozen nurses and other paramedical staff had deployed in each centre to facilitate women patients.

The centers have been established at Gujranwala DHQ, Kamoki and Wazirabad THQs and RHCs of Sodara, Ghakkhar, Dhaunkel, Qila Dedar Singh, Naushera Virkan, Aimanabad, Wahando, Alipur Chattha and Rasul Nagar.

PO: A notorious proclaimed offender who was killed in an encounter with police in Kotla Arbab Ali Khan was a symbol of terror.

This was stated by additional IG and regional police officer Malik Muhammad Iqbal while speaking at a briefing here on Tuesday.

He said the regional police had busted 7,852 POs and 7,925 court fugitives during the current year so far. While as many 23 criminals were killed and 54 arrested during 35 encounters. He said the encounters also left as many as four policemen dead and 17 injured. He pledged that campaign against the POs would continue.
