Report sought on MPs’ production orders

By Our Staff Reporter

ISLAMABAD, Nov 3: The Supreme Court on Friday expressed dissatisfaction over a report on parliamentarians who were not allowed to cast their votes during parliamentary

proceedings and ordered the government to submit a detailed list of such cases since the independence of the country.

Deputy Attorney-General Nasir Saeed Sheikh had submitted a report regarding production orders issued for parliamentarians from 1996 but the bench comprising Justice Mohammad Nawaz Abbasi

and Justice Saiyed Saeed Ashhad directed him to re-submit the list of orders issued by the National Assembly since independence.

The bench was hearing an appeal of Maimoona Hashmi seeking permission for her detained father Makhdoom Javed Hashmi, president of the Alliance for the Restoration of Democracy, to cast his vote in the March 10 Senate elections for the capital’s seat.

Ms Hashmi was represented by Advocate Zafar Ali Shah, while Munir Bhatti appeared on behalf of the government.

At the last hearing, the apex court had asked National Assembly Secretary Ziaul Haq to provide complete history as to how many parliamentarians had been detained in the past decade but allowed to attend house proceedings.
