Toru Khan expects to prevail over others

By Aftab Gilani

LAHORE, Nov 3: The Lahore Winter Meetings will take a fresh start with the staging of five cup events promising a truly competitive racing action when a card of eight races go through at the day/night programme at the Racecourse on Saturday.

A magnificent array of activities accompanied by cups galore will be in evidence with the strong thoroughbred and half-breed flavour to the racing. In all, 91 thoroughbreds and half-breeds will be vying for the eight races barring last-minute withdrawals.Races scheduled for Sunday are being held a day earlier in view of the ICC cricket Champions Trophy final.

The feature event, the Y.P.O Cup for class IV division I, to be contested over 1400 metres, has ten acceptors, if there are no last-minute withdrawals. Of them four are prominent. They are: Toru Khan, Miss Pole, Who Dares and Lucky Murad.

The way, three-year-old bay colt, Toru Khan, had won the class IV division II race on October 8, he should prevail over the others and make it two in a row. The rest should fight for a place on the board in this eighth and last race of the day.

The second Y.P.O Cup for class IV division II to be gone over 1400 metres has nine contestants with three in fighting line, namely, Baker's Gal, Jut Bahadur and Para Game. Keeping in view the previous running, Baker's Gal, seems to have an edge in this seventh race of the card.

There is yet another Y.P.O Cup for class IV division III to be run over 1400 metres. On handicap and form it looks tilted in favour of three-year-old filly, Noor, who has on the trot won four straight races in her five outing to date. No other contender matches the performance of this daughter of Cisco Wells out of No Lunch. However, Ferrari, Top Cat and Great Murad had put up some good performances during the on going season.

Mamula, Jago and Charming King are pick of the dozen drawn for the Mianwali Cup, a class V division I handicap race over the sprinting distance of 1000 metres. The first two named are the fastest among the trio to battle for supremacy over the distance. There are nine colts and fillies for the Daily Times Cup, a term race over 1000 metres for two-year-old half-breed colts and fillies. On previous running four are on chance, namely, Cheeta Aya, Richy Dancer, Beautiful Baby and Aaja Bulbul. Since two-year-olds are passing through a training phase in preparation for future racing career, they are not as reliable proposition as the grown ups to bet on. This will be the fourth race of the day.

The starting declarations for all the events will be received by the Lahore Race Club (LRC) on Saturday at 10am and will announce them immediately. The first race is scheduled to start at 1:30pm.
