Philosopher poised for second victory

By Aftab Gilani

LAHORE, Oct 21: A strong turn out is all set for a seven-event pre-Eid-ul Fitr racing card when the 8th Lahore Winter Meeting gets under way at the Racecourse on Sunday.

In all, 77 acceptors will be on the field for the seven races comprising four or five chance horses in each, making the events contesting and open affairs making winner picking a difficult task for the race-fans.

A comparative analysis of the past and present performances of the runners is an indicator to making one's choice as winner. But this cannot be always a factual guideline while determining the best among them because it involves many factors including that whether a horse is on job. Moreover is he sent in a fit condition to perform on merit and who is the jockey to ride?

With a facile victory to his credit, the fast improving seven-year-old gelding, Philosopher, will be on the trot to make it two in a row.

Placed at nine stones two pounds in Kasur Plate Class V division II to be gone over 1100 metres, this son of Blue Love and Dam by High Spot, Philosopher, faces the second largest field of the day with 14 runners, if there are no last-minute withdrawals.Among his rivals, Manu Janu and hero's Hope are prominent to prove thorns in his way to victory.

The opener has the largest field of 18 runners barring last-minute withdrawals. Of them Stride To Moment, Dogar's Gift and Wah Cisco Wah look good on the performance statistics table. But as the field is big, if any of the contestants is slow to come out of the gate accidentally or intentionally by the rider, he is not likely to make up the lost ground.

Bad-e-Naseem, Tornado, Welcome Mayla and Queen Of Music are prominent sprinters in the eleven drawn for the second race. On bloodline, the filly from Cry For The Clown, Queen Of Music stands out. She last ran on July 2 last and was striding well.

The third event, a term race for two-year-old half-bred colts and fillies to run over 900 metres is an open race. All the eleven contestants will be on the course to open their racing debut and their performance is unpredictable.

Great Murad, Jewna and Simoom attract attention among the dozen acceptors for the fifth race. They should decide about the winner.

The sixth race may provide a close contest between Jut Bahadur and Ferrari, with the former having an edge while Tuman Khan, Acillese and Nosheen will be jostling for supremacy among a dozen runners for the seventh and last event.

The first race will be held at 12.30pm.
