ISLAMABAD, Oct 14: The Special Senate Standing Committee on Women Development has directed for the implementation of laws pertaining to the inheritance of women and in this regard asked the government to set up summary courts for the hearing of cases.

The committee, which met here on Saturday in the Parliament House under the chairmanship of Senator Jamal Leghari, discussed laws related to inheritance of women and custom of Vani.

The committee was informed by Ministry of Women Development that laws regarding fundamental rights of women and related to inheritance exist in Islam and in the constitution of Pakistan but unfortunately these were not implemented.

The committee directed to conduct a nation-wide survey with the collaboration of Statistical Division aiming to find out the number of women who are deprived of their inheritance rights.

The outdated custom of Vani was also criticized in the meeting and recommended that FIR in this regard not registered until complete investigations of the case and to provide complete protection and justice to affected girls and to create awareness among masses about that custom.—Online
