KARACHI: Generators to be installed at Malir pumping stations

KARACHI, Oct 14: City Nazim Mustafa Kamal on Saturday directed the KWSB authorities to install generators at all pumping stations in Malir to continue water pumping in case of power breakdown or failure.

The “monopoly” of staff at the pumping stations should be eliminated and a campaign should be started against illegal water connections obtained from main lines, he said while addressing a joint meeting of Union Nazims, Naib Nazims, KWSB and Town officials at Malir Town Nazim's office here. Malir Town Nazim Ansar Ahmed Sheikh and Naib Town Nazim Sharafat Ali were also present.

He also asked to separate water lines from sewerage lines and ordered preparation of PC-1 for laying separate water lines in Malir Town.

The nazim said that water should be provided to the entire city and issues of citizens must be resolved. He pointed out that mostly water supply got badly affected due to power failures and resultantly citizens had to face trouble, especially in those areas where water was provided on rotation basis. If electric supply gets suspended in an area on its turn, people remain deprived of water for long, he added.

Mr Kamal urged that special arrangements should be made in this regard so that water supply could not get affected even after power breakdowns. He asserted that installing generators was essential for this purpose.

He ordered the officials concerned to prepare PC-1 for installation of generators at 12 pumping stations so that constant provision of water to Malir Town and Model Colony through generators could be ensured.

In the first phase, 400KV generators would be purchased for Saudabad pumping station and 200KV for others.

It was told that 1,200mgd water was being provided to Malir Town in the past which had been raised up to 17 million gallon water daily.

Mustafa Kamal also directed the officials concerned to ensure laying of waterlines in Jaffar-i-Tayyar before Eidul Fitr.

He took serious notice of public complaints regarding dereliction of old staff in opening and closing times of the pumping stations. He said that staff would be transferred against whom any public complaints would be received. He asked for improvement of water distribution system.

The nazim also directed to start a drive against illegal water connections, obtained from main waterlines. Malir Town Nazim, TPO and KWSB officials would take part in the drive.

He also asked to prepare a report on illegal water connections by conducting a survey from the Water Board Peeri to Shah Faisal Colony.

Mustafa Kamal asked them to lay separate sewerage and water lines in future so as to keep drinking water clean from pollution.

He said sewerage lines would be laid on one side of the road and water lines on other side. This same strategy would be adopted as a policy in future and during shifting of lines.

He asked to gear up the pace of work on Malir-Kala Board sewerage lines work. He informed the meeting that funds of Rs1.7 million had been approved to stop contamination of gutter water into drinking water in UC-3.

He also directed to construct another water tank of the same size as constructed 40 years back at Saubabad pumping station.
